Future Combat Systems: Non-Line-of-Sight Mortar

The Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) Mortar is an integral part of the U.S. Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) Program and one of eight Manned Ground Vehicles (MGV) being developed for FCS.

Designed and built by BAE Systems, in partnership with General Dynamics, Land Systems and the FCS Lead System Integrator team of Boeing and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the NLOS Mortar is an automated, single-tube, breech-loaded 120-mm smoothbore turreted mortar vehicle with a three-person crew in a delta-seating arrangement.

Combat experiences from Operation Iraqi Freedom demonstrated the value of responsive mortar fire support and the need for greater protection for mortar crews. As the Army transitions to a Modular Force structure, the NLOS Mortar, with the crew under armor, will transform the traditional role of the mortar on the battlefield and will provide the most accurate and responsive short-to-mid-range fire support critical to the infantry Soldier in the close fight.
