BAE Systems - Navy League 2009

5-inch LRLAP

A BAE Systems-led team, including Lockheed Martin and other members of the successful 155-mm Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) team, is conducting a spiral development of a 5-inch LRLAP, applying proven 155-mm LRLAP technologies and subsystems. Leveraging the successful 155-mm LRLAP results in substantially reduced development cost and risk.  Numerous components and subsystems have already been demonstrated, and the self-funded program is on schedule to conduct multiple guided flight demonstrations in 2009.  The 5-inch LRLAP will provide precision fires to ranges more than 50 nautical miles, in-flight re-targeting capability, multiple round, simultaneous impact (MRSI) capability, and lethal, cost-effective performance against a wide range of targets.

The effort is being undertaken to provide a system that addresses identified capability gaps, solutions for which are currently being evaluated in the ongoing Joint Fires Analysis of Alternatives (AoA).  Naval gunfire offers numerous unique, cost effective contributions to the Joint Fires Triad including persistence, sustainability, flexibility, proportionality, responsiveness, and availability.  Coupled with the BAE Systems’ Mk 45 Mod 4 5-inch gun system and its worldwide population, expected to grow to over 150 mounts, 5-inch LRLAP will greatly expand Naval Surface Fire Support capability.
