Mission

The Mk 38 Mod 2 Machine Gun System meets the U.S. Navy's urgent need to improve the lethality and effectiveness of its ship-protection systems.  The Mk 38 Mod 2 provides a last layer of defense and provides the U.S. Navy with an unprecedented level of situational analysis and Maritime Domain Awareness. Over the last several years, BAE Systems and its partners have designed and developed minor caliber naval gun systems to provide the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard with highly lethal defensive systems for ship self-protection.

In 2004, the BAE Systems-led team won the U.S. Navy's competition to upgrade the existing Mk 38 to the 25-mm Mk 38 Mod 2 Machine Gun System. This major upgrade provides both a stabilized platform and target acquisition capabilities for the Mk 38 Mod 2, giving U.S. Navy surface ships a decisive edge when dealing with small boat threats and port security.
