Non-Line-of-Sight Mortar
The NLOS Mortar is one of eight Manned Ground Vehicles being built as part of FCS and is being designed by BAE Systems as an automated, single-tube, 120-mm smoothbore turreted mortar with a four-person crew in a quad-seating arrangement.
The breech-loaded NLOS Mortar will provide 24/7 fire support in all weather conditions and have a range of eight kilometers, maximum rate of fire of 16 rounds per minute, and a sustained rate of eight rounds per minute. The NLOS Mortar will be capable of firing a six-round Multiple-Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) mission. The ability to launch a MRSI mission will give U.S. soldiers unprecedented and unparalleled mortar fire support.
With its 360-degree traversing turret and ability to carry more than 60 rounds in onboard ammunition magazines, the NLOS Mortar will allow infantry soldiers to dominate in either an urban combat environment or in open terrain.
As part of the strategic vision for FCS, NLOS Mortar will be integrated into the network-centric battlefield environment with a fully digitized cockpit specifically designed to maximize combined arms combat and ensure the safety of soldiers operating the system. The crew compartment offers protection from nuclear, biological, and chemical environments and anti-personnel mine protection.
The NLOS Mortar is a new concept in fire support and will transform the traditional role of the mortar on the battlefield. BAE Systems will deliver the first NLOS Mortar prototype vehicle per FCS schedule.
